My Experience as a Citizen Scientist

Mapping Prejudice Housing Project of UWM
[Mapping Prejudice identifies and maps racial covenants: clauses that were inserted into property deeds to keep people who were not White from buying or occupying homes. The UWM team collaborates with community members to expose the history of structural racism and support the work of reparations. Joan is participatant in the project.]
When the housing deed appears on my screen, I search for restrictive language. Sure enough, there it is in black and white, “The said real estate shall never be occupied by or conveyed to any person other than that of the white race.” The blatant racism of it strikes me. I feel sadness for the way people have been treated because of the color of their skin. Even though these deeds are now illegal, people of color still live the reality of racism every day. Change is possible, join us in making a difference through our racial justice ministry.
