Summer Field Trips
to Go Green

By Mary Kult

What’s on your summer agenda?

Consider how you can reduce the use of plastics in your life and share your success with family and friends.

  1. Farmer’s Markets are a great place to buy fresh produce and support local farmers. Bring your own bags to make it even more environmentally friendly.
  2. Make a trip to Milwaukee in the Third Ward and visit The Glass Pantry (1039 S. 5th St.) You will find sustainable items, vegan, package-free and bulk foods in one place. Bring your own containers and reusable bags. Shop online as well at glasspantrymilwaukee.com.
  3. Create your own to-go kits for the car by using a cloth napkin, your own fork, spoon and metal straw. As long as you’re downtown, bring a picnic lunch and soak in the pleasures of being along the lake and all that Mother Nature has to offer.
  4. Visit Outpost Natural Foods in Wauwatosa. Their aim is to eliminate single use petroleum-based plastic with alternative packaging for its prepared foods by 2025.
  5. For those who are computer savvy, Kayla Bouma shares her conscious consumerism lifestyle and her journey on her Instagram account, @sustainable.kay.
  6. Look for interesting facts on how other countries are going green, such as Portugal using wood utensils at their McDonald’s.
