Forever I Will Sing the Goodness of My God
What seemingly conveys joy, praise, and thanksgiving, the title of this Psalm 89 in the New American Bible Revised Edition is “Lament over God’s Promise to David.” However, the verses selected today reflect chiefly on God’s steadfast love and fidelity. Psalm 89 is a song of thanksgiving for what God has done for Israel from its beginning at Sinai to the raising up of David as king, and a profession of hope in what is to come for God’s people. God promises goodness and fidelity that urge us to respond with trust and love.
I sing your love all my days,
O God, your faithfulness,
from age to age.
I know your love is unending,
your fidelity outlasts the heavens.
“I, God, made a covenant
with my chosen one,
I swear to David, my servant,
to establish your house for ever,
to uphold your throne,
from age to age.”
David shall say of me,
“You are my father, my God,
the rock, my savior.’
I honor my pledge of love,
guard my covenant for ever.”
