Celebrate Arbor Day Today
By Mary Kult
Trees filter the air we breathe, absorb carbon dioxide, and provide cooling shade. Trees counter the “urban heat island” that results from concrete and other materials that hold heat. Trees can also decrease flooding and erosion. The best time to plant a tree is now.
I invite you to visit a site that showcases trees: Forest Home Cemetery is “Milwaukee’s first accredited arboretum. It opened in 1850 and has met the requirement having over 100 labeled trees, paid management, public access, and enhanced educational programs. Open daily for self-guided tours, public and private tours are also offered. Joggers, dog walkers, and bikers are all welcome to enjoy nearly 200 acres of natural beauty.”
As you are enjoying nature, use the following recipe for killing weeds and /or preparing new planting areas:
1 gallon vinegar | 2 cups salt | ¼ cup dish soap
It will kill anything you spray. Just mix and spray on in the morning after the dew has been evaporated.
