What Is Cyberbullying
Submitted by Monica Schultz
(Excerpt from WISCONSIN ICAC TASK FORCE)
The Cyberbullying Research Center formally defines cyberbullying as “willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.” In more common terms, cyberbullying is when someone repeatedly makes fun of another person online or repeatedly picks on another person through email/text message or when someone posts something online about another person that they don’t like.
It is important to remember that one instance of mistreatment cannot accurately be equated to bullying, as it must involve harmful behavior of a repetitive nature. Cyberbullying involves the following elements:
WILLFUL: The behavior has to be deliberate, not accidental.
REPEATED: Bullying reflects a pattern of behavior, not just isolated incident.
HARMFUL: The target must perceive that harm was inflicted.
