Celebrating Mary’s Assumption on Wednesday
Catholics are obliged to attend the Mass of Mary’s Assumption on Aug 15 (we celebrate the vigil on the evening of Aug 14.) Rather than focus on the “obligation,” perhaps we should consider the reasons of faith behind the obligation.
Mary is the Mother of Jesus and, as such, possesses the title and identity of “Mother of God.” Mary has enjoyed a singular place of honor and pre-eminence among the communion of saints. This merits special recognition and observance by the Church.
Mary’s Assumption teaches us about prayer, trust and hope. It’s also an example of our destiny in Christ and that death is not the end.

All of these wonderful reasons are highlighted in one of our most precious prayers:
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Come celebrate the Mother of God online or in-person at Good Shepherd this Wednesday, August 14, at 6:00 PM.
