Informed Entertainment with Derek Mosely
Submitted by Beth Pitterle
On September 23, we were educated and enlightened by Derek Mosely, Director of the Lubar Center at MU, when he presented: Things Your History Teacher Didn’t Teach You: Blacks in History.
He started out with an overview of the timeline of the beginning and ending of slavery in the U.S., which only officially ended with the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865 (less than 200 years ago!). He shared many stories, photos and contributions of African Americans that have been ignored or minimized in American history books.
Here is one example: Have you heard of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion? In the midst of WW II, this all-female African American unit undertook the monumental task of sorting and delivering a massive backlog of mail for the U.S. Military in Europe under deplorable conditions.
Many felt the evening ended too soon and would have loved to have learned more historical facts from Derek.
