Blessed are They Who Follow God’s Law

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm in the psalter and includes a carefully planned framework of many psalm types woven together in praise of God’s law. The relationship between the verses chosen for this psalm and the 1st reading and the gospel are evident. In general, the psalm uses eight synonyms for law. Today’s verses use four synonyms: decrees, precepts, statues and words. As you reflect on these verses, consider which Church teachings or laws of our nation about which you struggle. Is the will of God in these teachings or laws? Living God’s law calls us to be more compassionate, merciful, truthful and just.

Happy the blameless, who keep the decrees of the Most High,
walking the path of the law, seeking God with all their heart.
You have commanded that your precepts be diligently kept.
Oh, that I might be firm in the ways of keeping your statutes.
Be kind to me, your servant, that I may live your word.
Open my eyes to the beauty of your law.
God, teach me your ways and I will follow them closely.
Help me understand your will, that I may cherish your law.
