The Most High Comes to Rule the World with Justice
Psalm 98 bridges the 1st reading from Malachi and the gospel. The arrival of God brings jubilation, not fear. We are reminded that the earth is God’s, from the rivers to the mountains, from the seas to the dry land; the entire created world is a revelation of the Creator. Israel is convinced that God’s judgment will be fair and evenhanded. Despite evil and destruction in the world, we are called in words and deeds to create a world of justice and equity. In doing so, we anticipate the coming of Christ and help bring about the kingdom of God.
Sing praise to God with a harp, with a harp and sound of music.
With sound of trumpet and horn, make a joyful noise to our God.
Let the sea roar with its creatures, the world and all that live there!
Let rivers clap their hands, the hills ring out their joy!
Our God comes to rule the earth,
justly to rule the world, to govern the peoples aright.
