Respecting Our Indigenous Ancestors
By Barb Messerknecht
This past week was dedicated to our indigenous sisters and brothers. We were called to remember the Menominee, Ojibwe, Potawatomie, Ho-Chunk nations, to name a few. They arrived in Wisconsin and even the Menomonee Falls area thousands of years before European immigrants appeared.
Imagine how many times as residents of our village we hear, say, or write the word “Menomonee” each day. Take these opportunities to remember, respect, and learn about our ancestors. This must go beyond one week. Share your thoughts within your family, within your circle of friends.
