We Raised our Voices in Wausau
Submitted by Joan Plumley
You may have heard of a recent situation at Wausau East High School where Asian American parents and their gay son wrote a complaint about the music teacher’s racial and homophobic slurs directed toward the student. The complaint was dismissed. The student’s mental health suffered, the other students in the class were harmed too.
Our team wrote letters to the Wausau School Superintendent and others. Deacon Sandy wrote one too. An attorney for the family found that the investigation did not follow the district’s own policy. The teacher has since resigned. It’s a step in the right direction for Wausau students and racial justice.
