The Holy One Remembers the Covenant with Abraham and Sarah

In the first reading from the Book of Genesis, God promised Abraham and Sarah a son. God was true to the covenant: “The Holy One remembers the covenant forever.” The psalm verses highlight how God kept the divine promises to Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Rachel and their descendants. Such a reflection upon the patriarchs is unique among the psalms. We, too, are challenged to reflect all that God has done for us and to celebrate God’s presence in our midst. Think how God calls us to faith and how we respond.

Give thanks, acclaim God’s name,
tell all what the Holy One has done.
Make music and sing of God’s might wonders!

Revel in God’s holy name,
delight in seeking the Holy One.
Look always for the power, for the presence of God.

O children of Abraham and Sarah, God’s servant,
O descendants of Jacob and Rachel,
the chosen ones!

God is God; judge of all the earth,
who remembers the covenant spoken
to a thousand generations:
the agreement with Abraham and Sarah,
the oath to Isaac and Rebecca.
