Gay and Straight in Christ

By Ann Castiglione

Gay and Straight in Christ has been receiving reports from New Ways Ministry about some exciting movement toward inclusion in our Church recently. Here are a few examples:

5/18 – “German bishop Ludger Schepers attended an inclusive blessing service for couples and families held as part of a campaign to have the church formally recognize LGBTQ couples.”

5/24 – “An Italian archdiocese [Turin] has permitted a transgender person to receive the sacrament of Confirmation and the priest [Fr. Antonio Borio] who celebrated the sacrament explained: everyone has a place in the house of God and there is no discrimination based on the sex one has.”

5/31 – Pope Francis Appointed Cardinal Mateo Zuppi head of the Italian Bishop’s Conference. Cardinal Zuppi wrote:

“When communities will truly begin to look at people as God looks at them, then homosexual people – and everybody else – will begin to feel, naturally, a part of the ecclesial community.”

And on June 3, 2022, they reported that two of the three new Cardinals appointed by Pope Francis are LGBTQ positive. Cardinal-elect Robert McElroy of San Diego and Cardinal-elect Leonardo Steiner of Manaus, Brazil have both made positive LGBTQ statements.

Come Holy Spirit, Come!
